Seeing the Future Possibilities

Program: Professional Master’s Degree, Computer Science

Hometown: Bremerton, Washington

Career Goal: Start my own software design firm

Justin graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2006 and went right to work for a large government contractor, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). While there, his responsibilities quickly grew and he found himself filling the roles of optical engineer, laser physicist, software engineer, and systems administrator. “I realized that I liked working with computers a lot more than working with lasers. Once I came to this conclusion, I applied for a computer science degree at IU.”

“The computer science program really stresses the fundamentals and sound programming practices,” he says. His grasp of those best practices helped land him a summer internship with Microsoft as a Software Development Engineer, in fact.

Justin feels lucky that he saw his future possibilities working with computers early in his career, and offers this advice to prospective students: “Take as many math and science courses as you possibly can. You will be surprised at just how useful they end up being in the long run.”
