Program: Ph.D. In Information Science

Hometown: Thessaloniki, Greece

Home away from Home: Bloomington is the ideal city for graduate students.

Elli selected the Ph.D. program in Information Science because of the many opportunities to work with established faculty members to build and enhance research skills throughout. In particular, she picked the program because of her advisor Professor of Information Science Susan Herring, whose research focuses on computer-mediated communication.

“She’s been a great inspiration for me, both for her work and kind personality,” said Elli.

The diversity of the people—both faculty and students—in terms of cultural and academic backgrounds in the School has enhanced her experience. The culture provides an excellent environment for interdisciplinary research and the birth of novel ideas, and also for personal growth.

Even though she came to IU for the highly-ranked academic program, it is the warm and supportive environment in the School and community that makes it feel like home.

“I believe Bloomington is the ideal city for graduate students. It is quiet and safe, but there are also many great places for entertainment. It is an easy city to settle in,” she said of her home away from home.
