Artificial Life

This field of study uses simulations, computer modeling and robotics (to name a few approaches) to examine systems related to life (as it is, and as it could be), its processes, and its evolution.  Researchers in this area are focusing on the following:

  • How computers might be made to act more like the mind
  • Understanding how coordinated behavior arises from the dynamical interaction of an animal’s nervous system, its body, and its environment 
  • Studying the properties of evolutionary and self-organizing systems, both for understanding biology and for producing bio-inspired technology 
  • Cognitive mechanisms that people (and other animals) use to behave adaptively in their environments (more»)
