Shoemaker Innovation Center
Housed in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, the Shoemaker Innovation Center is a university-wide, student-focused source of creative and effective approaches to supporting innovation and entrepreneurship at Indiana University. The center was made possible through a generous gift from John and Donna Shoemaker.
John, who received his MBA from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, has held a variety of leadership positions in technology companies, including the Xerox Corporation and Sun Microsystems. He serves on the SICE Dean’s Advisory Council as well as the Shoemaker Innovation Center Advisory Board.
In addition to housing The Shoebox, a student startup incubator, the center hosts talks from experienced technology entrepreneurs as well as workshops to facilitate the development of the technical skills students need for the successful implementation of their business concepts.
The Shoebox is the student startup incubator at Indiana University. In conjunction with the Kelley School of Business' Hoosier Hatchery, a pre-incubator at Indiana University, and the City of Bloomington's Dimension Mill, a local startup accelerator, the Shoebox serves to facilitate student entrepreneurs moving beyond just talking about their business to building, launching, and sustaining their business. Toward that end, the Shoebox has partnered with the Protolab to provide student entrepreneurs the maker resources they need to make their products a reality. With co-working space, as well as educational programming offered through the Shoemaker Innovation Center, the Shoebox provides student innovators and entrepreneurs the support they need to succeed.

Shoemaker Entrepreneurship Mentoring Sessions
The Shoemaker Entrepreneurship Mentoring Sessions are a free, monthly service in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering to advise student entrepreneurs at IU who are working on, or thinking about, starting a company or commercializing an idea. Experienced entrepreneurs, such as Brad Wisler, founder and CEO of Periodic, and Pat East, founder and CEO of Hanapin Marketing, dedicate time each month to meeting with student entrepreneurs to provide them feedback on their business concepts. The advice comes with no obligation to work with the entrepreneurs or their companies.
The mentoring session dates are September 28th, October 26th, November 30th, January 25th, February 22nd, and March 29th. To schedule a mentoring session, please contact the Shoemaker Innovation Center staff at email@example.com.
Ice Miller Startup Law Advisory Sessions
Beyond general advice regarding their startups, entrepreneurs also tend to lack sufficient legal guidance in the early stages of a new venture’s development. The School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering is dedicated to increasing the resources available for student innovators and entrepreneurs at Indiana University. To that end, the Shoemaker Innovation Center has formed a partnership with Ice Miller, one of the largest law firms in Indianapolis, to provide free initial consultation to student innovators and entrepreneurs.
The purpose of this partnership is to provide students who are developing technologies to address real-world problems the confidence to expand their intellectual property into viable businesses without the fear of losing their rights to the intellectual property in the process. Services include, but are not limited to, intellectual property protection strategies, selecting a business structure, and drafting operating and partnership agreements. There is no obligation to work with Ice Miller beyond the advisory sessions. Although the initial consultation will be free of charge, subsequent meetings, filing fees, and other miscellaneous charges will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
The advisory session dates are September 14th, October 12th, November 9th, December 7th, January 18th, February 15th, March 22nd, and April 19th. To schedule a mentoring session, please contact the Shoemaker Innovation Center staff at firstname.lastname@example.org.
