The best way to ensure that student voices are represented when making decisions on behalf of students is to include them in the decision-making process. To accomplish that at SICE, the Ideation & Creation Entrepreneurss (ICE) was formed to serve as the voice for student innovators and entrepreneurs in the school. In addition, the Shoemaker Scholars, a cross-campus student entrepreneurship ambassador group, was launched to facilitate the dissemination of information to student innovators and entrepreneurs at Indiana University. The result is StartupIU website and newsletter, which the group manages.
Thanks to the generosity of John and Donna Shoemaker, the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering launched the Shoemaker Scholars Program, a cross-campus student entrepreneurship ambassador group, in 2015. The Shoemaker Scholars are a prestigious group of 10 students from across academic programs at IU selected for their entrepreneurial ambition and drive. As a Shoemaker Scholar, students receive a scholarship of $3,000 per academic year. At the end of each academic year, members are required to re-apply.
Students interested in being considered for this selective scholarship must be an undergraduate in good academic standing (cumulative and most recently completed semester grade-point averages of 3.0 or better) who is studying at Indiana University Bloomington and who articulates their passion for innovation and entrepreneurship, both through their future career aspirations and their current endeavors, such as group involvement, certificates, and degrees being completed in these areas, and startup businesses developed or being developed. The Shoemaker Scholars meet weekly to develop and host activities to enhance knowledge of and experience with innovation and entrepreneurship on behalf of all students at Indiana University.
Sign up for the StartupIU newsletter if you are interested in receiving information about activities related to student innovation and entrepreneurship at Indiana University and Bloomington at large. You can sign up for the newsletter, which is managed by the Shoemaker Scholars, through the StartupIU website.
If you are interested in becoming a Shoemaker Scholar, contact Dr. Brown at email@example.com. Applications for the 2018-19 Shoemaker Scholars are due by Friday, March 2 at 5 p.m. EST. The program flyer provides additional details regarding the application process, and the roles document explains the functional roles played by the Shoemaker Scholars.
