ALA Student Chapter: National Chapter of the Year Runner-up

The Indiana University American Library Association-Student Chapter (ALA-SC) once again received national recognition. Last year, the ALA-SC was named 2005 ALA Student Chapter of the Year. This year, they were selected as the runner-up for the 2006 ALA Student Chapter of the Year Award. As stated on ALA website, the award is presented in recognition of a chapter's outstanding contributions to ALA, its school, and the profession.

SLIS faculty member Tom Nisonger and Mary Popp, IU Public Services Librarian for Information Technology, are the faculty advisors of ALA-SC. You can read the ALA-SC Executive Council web page for profiles and email addresses. When asked about the receiving national awards two years in a row, the ALA-SC advisors wrote:

"It is hard not to be excited by the enthusiasm of the members and the leaders of the IU ALA Student Chapter. They have developed a group that provides both professional and social value to all SLIS students. Recognition from the ALA New Members Round Table two years in a row is icing on the cake."
- Mary Popp
"I'm really proud of our ALA SC students for their enthusiasm and commitment to the profession. The ALA SC's programs and activities significantly enhance the educational experience of SLIS MLS students."
- Tom Nisonger

The announcement for this year's award is included on the ALA-Student Chapter website:

For the second year in a row, the American Library Association has recognized the efforts of the Bloomington Student Chapter. This year we have been selected as runner-up for the Student Chapter of the Year Award. Terry Buckner, chair of the award committee, cited the chapter's "membership recruitment and retention efforts, the breadth and variety of committees, programming opportunities for your membership, and chapter involvement on the State and National level" as particular strengths of the group. The chapter will receive a certificate of recognition at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
