SLIS student Bergis Jules has been selected as a 2006-08 Diversity Scholar by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce. Jules is pursuing a dual degree in MLS and MA in African American & African Diaspora Studies.
"I feel very privileged to have received this scholarship," said Jules. "It is an excellent opportunity to help me succeed in the field of Library Science. I am thankful to the Association of Research Libraries and Indiana University for their continued commitment to a diverse workforce in the research library field. Their commitment to diversity is an important and necessary endeavor and I hope more underrepresented students take advantage of this opportunity."
The ARL Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce "offers a stipend of up to $10,000 to attract students from underrepresented groups to careers in academic and research libraries." ARL is committed to the creation of a diverse academic and research library community that will better meet the new challenges of global competition and changing demographics. The initiative is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and ARL member libraries. [ARL website]
