Places & Spaces Exhibit at MCPL - May 2007

The Places & Spaces exhibition will be on display at the Monroe County Public Library (MCPL) from May 1 through May 30, 2007. The show uses maps, diagrams, and globes to create a navigable landscape tracing and charting developments in science. The interactive exhibit will be shown in the MCPL atrium and art gallery. An opening reception at MCPL will be held on Friday, May 4, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. featuring a talk on "The Story of Science Maps (pdf)" by Katy Börner.
The display will feature hands-on science puzzle maps for kids. MCPL and the organizers of Places & Spaces will hold a local contest for kids to create their own favorite science story and drawing.
Kids Drawing Contest
Kids, ages 4-15, are invited to draw a picture of and write a story about their favorite scientist or science experiment. Prizes include a one year membership to Wonderlab, a science experiment kit, science encyclopedia, and ice cream! Submissions will be judged based on originality, creativity and quality, combination of drawing and story, and appropriate use of theme. The hand-drawing should be on regular sized paper (8.5 x 11) and the story about the drawing should be 25 to 100 words. The story could be about the scientist or experiment depicted in the drawing. The submission deadline is May 10. The winners will be notified by email on May 15. The Winning entries will be on display at the MCPL from May 18 to the end of June. Places & Spaces is curated by SLIS faculty member Katy Börner and Julie Smith, Indiana University. The display at MCPL was arranged by Margaret Harter and presented by Julie Smith. The exhibition has also been on display at the New York Public Library, New York Hall of Science, and American Chemical Society National Meeting & Exposition in Chicago.
