The Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center was recently awarded a grant of $198,812 by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Small Grant for Exploratory Research (SGER) will fund a unique collaboration among artists and scientists with the goal to develop, implement, and validate novel metaphors and approaches to access, manage, and communicate scholarly datasets. The project, entitled "Creative Metaphors to Stimulate New Approaches to Visualizing, Understanding, and Rethinking Large Repositories of Scholarly Data," is under the direction of SLIS faculty member Katy Börner.
Project Summary
We are interested to design maps of science that show science from above together with dynamic aspects of scientific evolution and progress. This award will provide the resources to host artists in residence at the Information Visualization Laboratory and the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center at SLIS, IUB. The artists will work with database experts on the parsing, structuring, and loading of new datasets into our multi-terabyte database of scholarly data. They will get to play with a multitude of data analysis and visualization algorithms. They will participate in brainstorming, technical, and design sessions.
This close collaboration of artists and scientists is expected to result in qualitatively novel means to study and communicate science. Giving researchers, practitioners, science policy makers, teachers, students, and the general public at large a global view of science is likely to catalyze rapid and innovative advances in the way scientific knowledge is disseminated into education and industry applications.
