Network Workbench Workshop - Beijing, China

Weixia (Bonnie) Huang was invited to give a lecture and run a Network Workbench (NWB) workshop on July 18th, 2007 in the Complex System Summer School in Beijing, China supported by the National Science Foundation, the Santa Fe Institute, and The Chinese Academy of Sciences. Huang is the Senior Systems Architect at the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center, Indiana University located at SLIS. Katy Börner, SLIS faculty member, is the Director of the Center.

The program provided an intensive introduction to complex behavior in mathematical, physical, living, and social systems for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The workshop taught students and researchers how to get familiar with the NWB tool and the various datasets, algorithms, and tools that can be used to conduct network science research.

After the lecture, many students came forward to ask questions and showed a strong interest in the NWB tool. Some of them decided to develop their own algorithm plug-ins based on the NWB/CIShell framework. Huang also presented several large-scale information visualization works done at the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center during the workshop.

    "Network Workbench: A Large-Scale Network Analysis, Modeling and Visualization Toolkit for Biomedical, Social Science and Physics Research. This project will design, evaluate, and operate a unique distributed, shared resources environment for large-scale network analysis, modeling, and visualization, named Network Workbench (NWB). The envisioned data-code-computing resources environment will provide a one-stop online portal for researchers, educators, and practitioners interested in the study of biomedical, social and behavioral science, physics, and other networks. The NWB will support network science research across scientific boundaries."
