From September 7, 2007, through January 7, 2008, the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is housing Places & Spaces: Mapping Science. The exhibit explores the potential for greater understanding of developments in science when they are traced and charted on maps, diagrams, and globes.
Curated by SLIS faculty member Katy Börner and Julie Smith of Indiana University, Places & Spaces has previously been on display at the New York Public Library, New York Hall of Science, American Chemical Society National Meeting & Exposition in Chicago, and most recently, the Monroe County Public Library.
Events in conjunction with the Places & Spaces exhibit at the museum include:
- a lecture by Eugene Garfield, chairman emeritus of Thompson Scientific, who presented "On the Shoulders of Giants: tracing the impacts of information retrieval systems on science policy" on September 18, 2007
- a drawing contest for kids during the month of October
- an additional exhibit called "Dark Matter in Astrophysics from DOE R&D Results," which illustrates the use of databases in making connections between researchers and their developments at the U.S. Department of Energy.
The exhibit is sponsored by National Science Foundation awards IIS-0238261 and CHE 0524661; the Cyberinfastructure for Network Science Center and the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University; and Thomson Scientific. Ken Mayes, deputy director of the American Museum of Science and advisor for the exhibit, is providing support and event organization for Places & Spaces at AMSE.
