Library Journal selected SLIS alumnus John Watts as a 2011 Mover & Shaker. Watts, who received his MLS in 2009, is the Reference and Outreach Librarian at Coastal Carolina University's Kimbel Library.
In its profile, Library Journal wrote:
•“Protector of Privacy — When John Watts arrived at the Kimbel Library at Coastal Carolina University in 2009, meaningful fun was close on his heels. His engaging marketing and outreach efforts have included a ‘de-stress fest’ before finals, an Edible Book Contest, a presence in social media, and a video about censorship and a reading from banned books during Banned Books Week. According to his nominator, Barbara Burd, dean of library services, these initiatives and more helped the library become known as a ‘user-friendly, student-centered environment.’ ”
In addition to attracting users to the library, Watts utilizes his talent for outreach to inform students about privacy issues, both in and out of the library. He believes “librarians are in a good position to be a strong voice at the local and national level.”
Information regarding the Movers & Shakers nomination process can be found on the Library Journal Website.
Watts was selected as a 2011 Mover & Shaker - in the Advocate category. Deb Noggle (MLS'05) was also selected as a 2011 Mover & Shaker - as a Community Builder. Other SLIS alumni have received this honor over the years. Read their profiles using the search feature on our SLIS News page.
