In the Spring 2013 issue of SLIS Network, we included this introduction:

Meet Dean Schnabel

Dr. Robert B. (Bobby) Schnabel will become the Dean of the merged School of Informatics and Computing, which will include all SLIS programs. This appointment begins July 1, 2013, but he has already been getting to know SLIS faculty, staff, alumni, students - and degrees. Over the past year, he has included SLIS representatives from both campuses in his School of Informatics Leadership Council. Dean Debora Shaw meets with him regularly; he has participated in SLIS faculty meetings in Bloomington and IUPUI and has met with individually with many SLIS faculty members. SLIS faculty and staff have been invited to meetings of their School of Informatics counterparts, a move that has eased the transition in preparation of the merger. Dean Schnabel’s approach has characterized by consistent respect and collaboration. His efforts to get better acquainted with SLIS include inviting Brian Schottlaender (MLS'80) to be a member of the School of Informatics Dean’s Advisory Council (a group that meets twice a year and includes prominent alumni and members from Google, Microsoft, Eli Lilly, and several regional tech companies). In April 2012, Dean Schnabel met with the SLIS Alumni Board and invited SLIS alumna Carrie Donovan (MLS'99) to meet with the Informatics Alumni Board.

  • Bobby Schnabel received the A. Nico Habermann Award by the Computing Research Association for his outstanding work increasing the presence of underrepresented groups in the computing research community. The award is considering the premiere recognition for promoting diversity in the U.S. computing research community. (7/24/12)
  • He was one of 12 people honored at the White House in December 2011 for leading efforts to recruit and retain girls and women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. (12/8/11)

Dean Schnabel came to Indiana University in July 2007 as the Dean of the School of Informatics - system-wide. His prior position was as Vice Provost for Academic and Campus Technology and Chief Information Officer at the University of Colorado at Boulder (1998-2007). At UC Boulder, he was the founding director of the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society (ATLAS), a campus-wide institute that serves as a catalyst for multidisciplinary curricular, research and outreach activities involving the content and tools of information technology. Dr. Schnabel received the B.A. in mathematics from Dartmouth College in 1971, summa cum laude, and the M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from Cornell University in 1975 and 1977.
