The School of Informatics and Computing is pleased to host the Intel Perceptual Computing Lab during the week of October 21, 2013.
The UX (User Experience) Studio at the Intel Computing Lab is teaming up with the Human-Computer Interaction Design program at the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing, the UX Studio’s first such collaboration with a university. Lab Director and Intel Principle Engineer Dr. Rajiv Mongia and Intel Rapid UX Designer/Creative Developer Robert Cooksey will be visiting Indiana University to kick off the collaboration. The partnership might include Intel-supported Master’s Capstone projects, early sharing of new technologies and prototypes for IU faculty and students to test, as well as research collaborations surrounding the design of related technologies.
During the stay, they will provide a three-hour hands-on workshop on the use of the Intel Perceptual Computing SDK and the gesture camera kits at Professor Shaowen Bardzell’s Advanced Prototyping class.
This SDK allows users to create “immersive, engaging, innovative software applications that incorporate close-range depth tracking, speech recognition, facial analysis, and augmented reality.”
Students will also participate in a three-hour hackathon, which is a collaborative computer design and programming event, immediately following the class.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity for our students to get their hands on an emerging technology to explore not just its technical implications, but more fundamentally to ask questions about its implications for future user experiences,” says Bardzell, who is hosting the visit.
The Intel visitors will also offer a public demonstration and workshop on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Indiana Memorial Union Oak Room through IU Makes, which Bardzell codirects. IU Makes is a cross-departmental initiative uniting a people “interested in using innovative technologies and software along with traditional tools and materials to create things.”
Intel Perceptual Computing Lab is a research, design, and development center devoted to the advancement of perceptual computing by making interactions with systems and devices more intuitive and natural.
