Effective February 27, 2017, Jeffrey Trzeciak, MLS alumni, will serve as Director of Newark Public Library.
In this position, he plans to “help Newark redefine the ‘urban public library’ for the 21st century” by partnering with educational and cultural groups throughout the community to increase fundraising efforts and reaffirm the library’s commitment to social justice and diversity. He says, “Working with the Library’s Board of Directors, I believe that Newark Public Library can become a catalyst for change in Newark. I am confident that we can we can help the Library meet the needs of Newark residents, particularly in the African American and Hispanic communities.”
Trzeciak credits his IU education with preparing him for work in a wide range of libraries throughout his career, including public and academic, as well as both U.S. and Canadian institutions.His advice to current MLS students: “Take advantage of every opportunity you have. Don’t box yourself in by focusing too narrowly.What the profession needs are individuals who are willing to do new things, take new risks, step outside of our normal comfort zones and explore new roles and new relationships. Most of all, have fun!”
