Martin Swany has been named the new chair of the Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering at the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. Swany previously served as associate chair of ISE.

Associate professor of ISE Maria Bondesson will move into Swany’s role as the associate chair of ISE.

Distinguished Professor Geoffrey C. Fox served as the chair of the department since its founding in 2016.

“I would like to thank Martin for accepting the position as chair of the intelligent systems engineering department,” said Raj Acharya, dean of SICE. “I look forward to working with Martin and the faculty, staff, and students of ISE and SICE to make it one of the most innovative programs in the country. I would also like to thank Geoffrey for initiating and building the Intelligent Systems Engineering program from scratch. He has done an outstanding job. Without him, ISE would not have materialized. Geoffrey is responsible for providing the intellectual and creative kernel of the ISE program.”

Swany earned his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2003, and he joined the faculty at SICE in 2011. His research areas include computer networks, high performance computing, the Internet of things, and parallel and distributed computing.

“I’m excited to be taking on this new role as chair of ISE,” Swany said. “Geoffrey has done a fantastic job in leading the program through its early days, and I’m looking forward to helping our faculty and students continue to build on this foundation for the future of Intelligent Systems Engineering.”

Bondesson earned her Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden in 1995 and is director of the Bondesson Lab where her research focuses on identifying toxic chemicals among environmental pollutants and deciphering the mechanisms by which they act.
