Most research is conducted far away from the spotlight of the public and without much recognition.
But sometimes it’s important to let a little light shine on those who truly deserve it.
The School of Informatics and Computing and the office of the Assistant Dean of Research celebrated its research efforts with a reception at the Wells House April 6 honoring researchers who have enjoyed success in a variety of ways over the past year.
“This ceremony is an opportunity to honor and show our appreciation for our faculty who have been tireless in their efforts to promote the innovative vision of SoIC through their research,” said Raj Acharya, the Dean of SoIC. “We appreciate all the hard work that keeps the School on the cutting edge of technology and strengthens our position as a leader on campus.”
Fred Cate, the vice president for research at IU, delivered short remarks at the event
“This is a very exciting time for research in the university in general,” Cate said. “SoIC’s external support has more than doubled in the last four years, and the School has played a key role in a number of important projects. SoIC is making critical contributions, and it seems like an important moment in the life of the School.”
Acharya and Martina Barnas, the assistant dean for research and the director of research collaborations, awarded certificates to a number of faculty on behalf of their research teams.
- Professor Predrag Radivojac accepted a certificate honoring the SoIC members of the Precision Health Initiative team, which includes Distinguished Professor Katy Börner, Associate Professor Kay Connelly, Distinguished Professor Geoffrey Fox, Associate Professor Steven Myers, Associate Professor Sriraam Natarajan, Professor Cenk Sahinalp, Associate Professor Katie Siek, Professor Haixu Tang, Assistant Professor Martha White, and Associate Professor Yuzhen Ye. The Precision Health Initiative is part of Indiana University’s $300 million Grand Challenges program.
- Associate Professor David Crandall accepted a certificate on behalf of Associate Professor Sriraam Natarajan, Assistant Professor Michael Ryoo, Assistant Professor Martha White, and Adjunct Associate Professor Chen Yu for their participation in the successful proposal “Learning: Brains, Machines, and Children,” which is a collaboration in IU’s Emerging Areas of Research program.
- Associate Professor Sriraam Natarajan was recognized for his work on the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement that was reached in January with the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane Naval Base.
- Professor L. Jean Camp and Associate Professor Steven Myers were honored for their leadership in Cybersecurity.
“We wanted to take a moment and celebrate the hard work of our faculty,” Barnas said. “We never really step back and celebrate their achievements, and we wanted to take this opportunity to honor some of the work that has been done. We look forward to an expanded roster of collaborations and more innovations in the future.”
IU Vice President for IT and Chief Information Officer Brad Wheeler, Vice Provost for Research Rick Van Kooten, Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives Munirpallam Venkataramanan, Assistant Vice President for Strategic Partnerships Kirk White, Associate Vice President for Research Faith Hawkins, Associate Vice Provost for Sciences Jeff Zaleski, and representatives of Crane Naval Base were among those in attendance at the event.
