- “Keep an open mind and explore any opportunities you encounter.” – K. Wehner
Kate Messing Wehner (MIS/MLS’11) is enjoying her career. She is an Information Architect with IU Communications. In a recent email interview, we asked her about her job. Below are her responses.
Name: Kate Messing Wehner
Job Title: Information Architect
Institution: Indiana University
Town: Bloomington, IN
My role as an information architect has expanded significantly over four and a half years. Of course there are wireframes, site maps, and usability testing—IA basics. I’ve also added stakeholder workshops, collaboration with developers on functionality implementation, strategy, user research, content audits, and a whole lot of presenting to my responsibilities.
My favorite part of this job is the variability. Each new project presents its own unique set of challenges: whether it’s the dynamic of the organization I’m working with, the state of the old website, or the goals the organization wants to achieve. I also love educating anyone I meet about the value of information architecture!
Tip for current students:
Don’t limit yourself by what you think you want to do after graduation. Keep an open mind and explore any opportunities you encounter—you never know if it will help you get to where you want to be.
