Cenk Sahinalp was one of nine new faculty members to join the School of Informatics and Computing staff this fall.
Sahinalp specializes in bioinformatics, and his research focuses on computational genomics and biomolecular sequence analysis, RNA structure and interaction prediction, network biology, and algorithms for chemoinformatics.
“Cenk is a world-renowned leader in computational genomics, drawing on an excellent base of expertise in theoretical computer science. His vision, energy, and breadth are an exciting addition to our already very strong bioinformatics group and to our School in general,” said Dean of the School of Informatics and Computing Bobby Schnabel.
Sahinalp is coming from the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University, where he has been a Professor and the Canada Research Chair in Computational Genomics and the director of the Lab for Computational Genomics. He is also a visiting faculty at the Vancouver Prostate Centre and the University of Washington. Before his time at SFU, Sahinalp was on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University and the University of Warwick. Early in his career Sahinalp also had visiting appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and Bell Labs.
He completed his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Bilkent University and earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Maryland.
Sahinalp is one of 11 new faculty members to join the School of Informatics and Computing this academic year.
